Frequently Asked Questions
-
Every project starts with a brief (30-40 minute) initial meeting, where we can discuss your project goals, needs, and any questions you have.
Following this meeting, I will provide a project proposal which includes a quote and timeline. If all looks good, we will sign a contract and begin working on the project.
Every project begins with in depth research into the topic. You will be asked for any references and research that have informed the project idea so far, which will be supplemented by further review of available literature/references. I believe that every project requires deep understanding, and aim to gather as many primary source materials (medical scans, photographs, videos, data) as possible.
After research, we will collaborate on an initial draft of the visualization. This could be sketches (for still media) or a script and storyboard (for animation).
We will bring this initial draft through further stages of refinement, towards the final deliverable. Checkpoints will be scheduled at key points in the process, to provide the opportunity for feedback, review, and approval.

After we have a brief initial meeting to discuss the goals and details of the project, you will be provided with a quote. Cost is usually quoted as a project fee, and is determined based on complexity, usage, and timeline of the project. Since each project is unique, so is the cost.
Animations are usually quoted using a cost per minute rate. This cost again reflects the complexity, usage and timeline of the project.
Project fees are usually invoiced in two stages: 50% before project start, and 50% after project completion.

I usually reserve 2-4 weeks for still images, although faster timelines can sometimes be accommodated.
1-2 minute animations typically take a minimum of 3 months.

Most of my clients are:
Researchers looking for figures to accompany journal submissions, grant applications, or presentations
Agencies who serve the communication needs of biotech and pharmaceutical clients
Hospitals looking to commission patient education materials.
However, I have loved working on projects outside of these needs. If you have any topic (including editorial) that you would like visualized, please get in touch!
